What does it mean to live a creative life?

By Tegan Georgette

Creativity is about bringing something new into existence, or transforming something that already exists

Through my exploration into creative practice, I realised there is a creative ability within all of us. You may think creativity is only necessary in the life of an artist, yet it is true that creativity, when used correctly has a power to change anyone’s life.

In my early days of being an artist I quickly realised that I was sacrificing my health, relationships and happiness in pursuit of creating the most beautiful, powerful painting I could. I was a frustrated artist as my artworks always seemed to fall short of the magnificent nature I was surrounded by. How could I compete with the ephemeral beauty of nature and life itself?

The sky is an ever-changing painting, the trees, flowers and our bodies are living breathing complex sculptures. Our life is one great performance full of pleasure and pain. I realised not only is there great joy in learning to appreciate the creations around us, we are also creators within this world. As I took my attention away from my canvas and toward the blank canvas of my life. I noticed I could create my reality in the same way I created a painting.

We all can shape our mind, bodies and existence using our thoughts, actions and perceptions. When I first realised this I asked myself, if my life was an artwork would I be happy with it? Where in my life can I CREATE more happiness, beauty and love. I employed the same concepts as I did to my art to my life…

How to be creative with your life…

  • Don’t be afraid to make mistakes – Often the fear of making a mistake or failing can stop you from starting. Remember if you do something you don’t like you can always change it. If you don’t do it in the first place how will you ever know.
  • Create something new – You are an individual like no one else. Don’t try to be the best copy of someone else. Instead be the best version of yourself with all your weirdness and individuality. People who succeed are the ones who fully embrace their own wacky ideas and aren’t afraid to show them to the world.
  • Think outside the box - Often we don’t realise how in the box we are with our thinking and actions. Experiment with dipping your toe outside the box try new ways of thinking and surprise yourself each day.

These three steps can apply to creating in any area of art or life. Most of all remember that the whole purpose of creating is to bring something new into the world that wasn’t there before, this takes bravery. Weather it’s a new version of yourself an idea or an artwork. Be brave enough to MAKE MISTAKES wild enough to CREATE SOMETHING NEW and wacky enough to THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.
